Check English evidence and suitability at the right stage

Admission evidence does not guarantee a registration outcome.

Use the nursing-specific English pathway

NMBA’s English registration standard took effect on 18 March 2025. There are evidence pathways; a test is one route. Ask how your education and language history relates to the current pathway requirements.

Ahpra’s accepted-test minimum scores changed on 23 April 2026. Use the current test table with the test date and transition rules. No individual score eligibility is assessed here. Provider admission checks are a separate stage.

Prepare accurate suitability evidence

The revised criminal history standard took effect on 15 July 2026. Identity and relevant health, conduct and registration-history declarations may need evidence. Decisions are individual; do not assume automatic acceptance or exclusion.

Why might English evidence be needed before study?

The NMBA English standard applies to an initial registration application, not to student registration. Separately, ANMAC criterion 6.1 requires applicants to be told before accepting an offer that those who would need a formal English test at registration must show a result at the NMBA-specified level before commencing the program. Language, literacy and numeracy evidence is also required before commencement.

Ask the provider which admission evidence applies to your education and language history, what must be supplied before starting, and how that differs from the later graduate application. NMBA sets the registration standard; Ahpra publishes accepted tests and scores. Use the table and conditions for the actual test date, rather than treating one score or an admission decision as a registration guarantee.
